Vondeling! Piccolo Mondo! Bravo!

Vondeling Wine is surely a story in itself.  Not only are they boasting an exceptional range of beautiful vinos, but they are conscious about sustainable practice and their sensitive approach to farming and wine making.  A little piece of the Paardeberg made it’s way to the big city last month where Vondeling was the star at a signature Gourmet dinner in collaboration with the renowned Michelangelo Hotel in Sandton.

Senior winemaker, Matthew Copeland and Executive Chef Trevor Boyd put their heads together and brought a gastronomical experience to guests who were enticed with picturesque food and luxury wines that were out of this world.  Piccolo Mondo restaurant situated in The Michelangelo Hotel was the perfect host to a six tier dinner experience.  Enough talk now, let me tell you exactly what treats we were in for:

We started off with the wonderful Vondeling Rosé with floating canapés and the mood was instantly set.  I had the huge privilege not only to meet Matthew Copeland but also to share dinner with him and to hear all about his passion for wine and how it all started.  Soon we were seated at crisp tables that were elegantly set and the show curtain opened up (ok, not a real curtain, but theatricals are in order here).

The Beginning, featured Pineapple and Saffron Cured Monk Fish Carpaccio, Monk Fish Ceviche, Pineapple Salsa, Sour Dough Wafer paired beautifully with the Vondeling Sauvignon Blanc. All I can say is Prima!

The Entrée was ever impressive with Braised Lamb Shank and Roasted Olive Tortellini, Slow Roasted Plum Tomatoes and Roasted Calamata Olive Dust.  The Vondeling Baldrick Shiraz was the perfect partner with it’s beautiful notes of plumbs and mulberries.

Thirdly the Main Event featured Coconut and Thyme Sous Vide Chicken, Buttermilk Chicken Lollipop, Chicken Rissole, Parmesan and Corn Purée, Wild Mushrooms with Smoked Coconut Veloute.  The food is just spectacularly plated and this Bowwood Pinotage was a stunner.  It’s savoury aroma with vanilla and plums was just phenomenal.  Did you know Vondeling just recently won the Michelangelo Award where their Vondeling Bowwood Pinotage scored top marks!  (Well done to Matthew and his team, you guys rock!)

Still the end was not in sight and we were treated to a special course named Goat’s Nectar.  Mild Belnori Kilimanjaro Cheese Salad, Almond Brittle, Candied Ginger, Citrus and Ginger Dressing was a beautiful cheese course and naturally paired with the crisp, citrusy notes of their Vondeling Chardonnay. Well done, or shall I say well dine!

The Grand Finale was a pleasure to taste, experience and process with Sour Cherry and Chocolate Pudding and Sour Cherry Ice Cream.  Here the Vondeling Cabernet Sauvignon ended things off with a stellar show.  This Cabernet Sauvignon was exceptional (I am biased to Cabernet Sauvignon, what can I say?).  It was silky, smooth and the smoky aromas played well with the sweetness of the dessert.

One thing is for certain, when it comes to the perfect gourmet experience, Piccolo Mondo and Chef Trevor Boyd are the creative geniuses who made this evening an experience one shouldn’t quickly forget.  To me, the cherry on the proverbial cake, non other than Matthew’s stories, passion and off course the premier selected range of Vondeling wines who were the stars of the the show.
